Q - What is a bellycast actually made of?
A - Bellycasting
uses Plaster Gauze strips, which are fabric strips impregnated with
Plaster of Paris. It is the same product used for setting broken
limbs, used in hospitals all over the world.
The
plastergauze is dipped in warm water and placed against your skin.
The water starts a chemical reaction and causes the plaster to
harden within 10 mins or so.
Q - When should I make
my bellycast?
A - About 36 to 38 weeks into your pregnancy,
when your figure is full and rounded, yet you can still be
comfortable enough to sit for the hour or so required to make the
cast.
Q - Will my baby be safe?
A - Your
baby will be perfectly safe, the products used are gentle on your
skin and non-toxic. There is a barrier cream used against your skin
called Tui Bee Balme, this is a natural New Zealand product made
from Beeswax, Olive Oil and Vitamin E. This prevents the
plastergauze from sticking to your skin and will leave your body
silky smooth and moisturised.
If you are using an ArtForms Bellycasting Kit, you can use the remainder of the pot
included in the kit on your newborn babies bottom to soothe and
prevent nappy rash, it is that gentle.
Q - I'm not
particularly artistic - Is it difficult to make a Bellycast
yourself?
A - with the detailed and easy to follow
instructions included in the kit, you don't have to be particularly
artistic to create an artwork you can be proud of.
Just
remember to read and follow the instructions carefully to get the
best results.
Q - It seems like a lot of effort
doing the casting then having to reinforce the inside - is there a
quicker way of doing it?
A - yes, instead of applying two
layers directly on the body and two more layers on the inside of the
bellycast, you can do four layers on the outside.
The idea
of reinforcing with two extra layers on the inside means you keep
all the detail of nipples, bellybutton etc on the outside.
So bear that in mind if you choose to do all four layers on
the outside, you will lose some of the detail.
